On-Page SEO Checklist for a Small Business Website

Search engine optimization dashboard and on-page checklist

An on-page SEO checklist helps you review the parts of a page that explain its purpose to visitors and search engines. Start with the visitor’s question: what information are they looking for, and does this page answer it clearly?

Match one page to one clear purpose

A service page should explain the service, who it is for and how to inquire. A course page should explain what students learn and where they can ask about enrollment. Avoid combining unrelated topics just to include more keywords.

Write in the language your audience understands. Use the main topic naturally in the introduction and relevant headings. Add useful details rather than repeating a phrase in every sentence. Review the content from a visitor’s point of view before checking an SEO plugin.

Check the title, description and headings

Give each page a distinct title that describes its content. Write a short meta description that helps someone decide whether to visit. Search engines can choose different text for a result, so a saved description does not guarantee the displayed snippet.

Use a clear main heading, followed by section headings that organise the information. The Google SEO Starter Guide explains the role of descriptive titles and useful content.

Add links that help visitors continue

Link to related pages when they answer the next question. A course article can point to the curriculum, while a project example can point to contact details. Use descriptive link text so readers know what they will open.

Describe informative images with accurate alt text. Compress oversized files and check how the page appears on a phone. Keep buttons easy to find and make sure menus and forms work.

Finish the on-page SEO checklist with a live review

Open the published URL and confirm that the page loads, the links work and the content is readable. Check the intended indexing setting and canonical URL. A green plugin score is a useful content check, but it does not guarantee search rankings.
